Lost Universe is a sci-fi anime series that's sometimes referred to as Slayers in space. It actually takes place in one of the four worlds of the Slayers Universe known as Black World years before the events of Slayers Try. The demi-gods Vorfeed (light god) and Dark Star (dark god) from Slayers Try at one point before they merge take the form of highly advanced spaceships known as Lost Ships.
Kain Blueriver is a trouble contractor/bounty hunter wielding a Psi Blade who does odd jobs just to pay the bills. He is the owner of the Lost Ship Swordbreaker which contains the essence of the god Vorfeed and its AI Canal Vorfeed who appears as a holographic image of a teenage girl. During the first episode they meet Milly who is an exceptional shot and a great cook (although she blows up the kitchen in the process) who eventually joins the crew.
Kain is trying to get revenge for the death of his grandmother at the hands of the organization Nightmare, which is trying to take over the galaxy. Nightmare possesses the Lost Ship that is Dark Star and other Lost Ships that have the names of the Dark Star weapons in Slayers Try. The boss of the Nightmare organization creates a clone body of himself but Dark Star takes control of it and along with a couple of minions fights against Kain and Swordbreaker.
I think this anime is underrated by a lot of people but it's one of my favorites. If you're a fan of Slayers you should watch this series. For a series that ran during the Southeast Asian Financial Crisis of 1998 with a limited budget it turned out good to me. The series is 26 episodes long.
The Opening Infinity by Megumi Hayashibara also the japanese voice actress for Canal Vorfeed and Lina Inverse. People who have seen the Slayers series should recognize the symbol at 1:13 as one of the four worlds created by the Lord of Nightmares
