Japan definitely got hit bad, my folks also mentioned they're also having major problems with a nuclear power plant melting down. They say the death toll will be in the thousands. How do you all feel about this catastrophe? Anyone with friends over there or had a chance to go to Japan at some point to experience it for yourself?

It's a terrible tragedy. Although, the good thing about Japan is, they were pretty prepared for said earthquake/tsunami, so at the very least, they took measures to make sure to lower the numbers of deaths. I'm glad people are taking the initiative to help Japan and numerous other countries that got struck by the earthquake and tsunami aftershocks. What worries me are those nuclear power plants. It seems the only way to make sure to stop the meltdown would be to continue venting the gas from the reactors that the coolant stopped working in. At the very least, I'm hoping all efforts on the nuclear plants and rescueing people in need go well for everyone.
What I find sick and twisted about all this, is some of the ignorance some people have shown after this tragedy. I've seen people comment on Japan's tradegy saying it's payback for Pearl Harbor. I just don't even know how to take that. Like wow, wtf that is fucking messed up. NO country deserves what happens in a tradegy like this but, to see people say "LOL take that for Pearl Harbor" and or be ignorant fucks about it makes me sick. It was the past people, let it go. This is exactly the attitude americans need to be rid of. This is the kind of attitude that leads to wars. People are people and if they need help, we as a country will help them regardless of who they are. I've also seen others take advantage of this situation, like companies trying to make a quick buck by advertising themselves when they help with the relief programs and such. Honestly...wow.

Yeah there are people out there who think just because they're Americans that they're better than everyone. But honestly things here just seem to be spiraling downhill here with the economy, the war in the Middle East. The President and military think they're above the law and the U.S. Constitution and would willingly engage the American people to the point I now fear a possibility of martial law in the future (I've been asking soldiers and ROTC cadets on campus about this and their answers more than verify it. Be on the lookout for any U.S. government/military activity that seems suspicious on the news whether it be national or local. Posse Comitatus Act - Federal troops are prohibited from engaging directly in domestic law enforcement. What happened during the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh is a direct violation of this act and freedom of speech, protesters were peaceful, U.S. military disguised as agitators were the ones who turned it into a riot. Even more disturbing is that this never made it into mainstream news only local news and alternative news media such as Infowars based in Austin, Texas which also had one of their reporters arrested during this incident. Apparently the same soldiers and ROTC cadets I've talked to have never heard of the Posse Comitatus Act isn't that something they should?). It seems the rest of the world is just doing badly nowadays and it's only a matter of time before it just explodes. Prior to this tragedy it seemed like Japan was doing fine.
I honestly would want to move out of the U.S. ASAP there are places in the world I'd rather be living in now and Japan would definitely be a country I would consider going to.

When I first found out about what happened, I was actually up at about 2am, watching youtube, and the top of youtube said that Japan was hit by a tsunami.
These events have really hit me hard, emotionally, becuase Japan is my favorite country and has a very special place in my heart. I grew up in a Christian home, and have always felt out of place in the United States, becuase I never accepted the "American" culture, becuase it just seemed very dumb to me, ever since I was a child. I eventually felt the need to adopt a culture, so I'd feel more accepted, more than just being accepted for what I beleived in.
I evetually decided to learn about the Japanese culture, and have liked it very much. I've even been trying to learn the language, but I got stuck at the verbs...
Anyways, I'm with you, rt054. I also want to move out of the US someday, maybe not ASAP but someday. I also agree with both of you that it's dumb when people say stupid things like that. I haven't heard anyone I know saying that Japan deserves it, but I know people are saying it, and that makes me angry.
I've honestly been thinking very hard about this, and I've been wondering if this might cuase some Japanese companies to decide to post-pone some releases of games and manga and anime, not just in Japan, but other countries. Although, that would not be a big deal compared to the other scenario that I thought of...
What could happen, which I really hope and pray does not happen, is if Japan were to be completely or mostly wiped out by natural disasters. I hate thinking about if this were to happen, becuase it makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it... But I think it would be a good idea to create a plan to keep Japan and it's culture alive somehow, in case that were to happen...
