This is a simple guide to which pokemon cards are good for buying, both for collecting, and for playing the trading card game.
The places pokemon cards can bought at are:
Target
Walmart
Hastings
The Limited format(the format used for most official tournaments, held by the Pokemon Company) is currently these sets:
D&P: Legends Awakened
D&P: Stormfront
Platinum
Platinum: Rising Rivals
Platinum: Supreme Victors
Platinum: Arceus
HeartGold, Soulsilver
HS: Unleashed
HS: Undaunted
HS: Triumphant
Call of Legends
Black and White(not yet released in the US)
The format is updated every August, rotating some of the older sets out. This August, we suspect they will rotate out Legends Awakened to Rising Rivals.
Here are the best cards that each sets contain:
Legends Awakened: Pokemon Level X, and the three lake Spirits
Stormfront: Pokemon Lv X, Gengar and Gyarados
Platinum: Pokemon Lv X and Pokemon SP
Rising Rivals: Pokemon Lv X and Pokemon SP
Supreme Victors: Pokemon Lv X and Pokemon SP
Arcesu: Pokemon Lv X, and Expert Belt
HS: Pokemon Prime, Pokemon Legends, and Ninetales
Unleashed: Pokemon Prime, and Pokemon Legends
Undaunted: Pokemon Prime and Pokemon Legends
Triumphant: Pokemon Prime and Pokemon Legends
Call of Legends: Ninetales, and a bunch of re-prints
Definitions:
Pokemon Level X:
Poekmon level X are used to make a pokemon more powerful, giving it more attacks, and/or pokepowers and poke bodies, and give players an advantage in certain areas. Leveling up pokemon is basically the same as evolving them, but they can still use their old attacks.
Pokemon SP:
Pokemon SP are pokemon that belong to certain NPC characters in the video games, and are counted as basic pokemon even if they are actually evolved pokemon. There are some pokemon SP that are very powerful, and are easy to get into play, becuase they are basic pokemon.
Pokemon Legends:
These are pokemon that require two cards, a top half and a bottom half in order to play it. These are always Legendary pokemon, and all of them are very powerful.
Pokemon Prime:
Pokemon prime are pokemon that are better than most of the others. Some of them are evolved pokemon, some of them are basic.
Decks:
Some decks are worth buying, some not so much.
Here is a review based on my experience of the ones I have bought before:
Legends Awakened:
The Heatran(Metal Surge) deck is a very good deck to buy if you plan to make a metal or grass deck, or if you plan on using Heatran Level X in a fire deck. Good crds included are Metagross(metal), Yanmega(grass), and Heatran(metal).
The Regigas(Bombardment) deck isn't so good.
Stormfront:
Both decks in this set are good, but the better one is the Gyarados(Raging Sea) deck, which is very good for building a water deck.
Platinum:
I was not able to find any of these decks in any stores in Las Cruces. That being said, when I looked up their contents on the internet, the Shaymin(Flourish) deck has Beautifly, which would be a really good attacker for grass decks, and it has Ninetales, which would be good for fire decks. The Giratina(Rebellion) deck has Gradevior, which is a somewhat good attacker for psychic decks.
Rising Rivals:
The Ryperior(Drill Point) deck is very good, becuase it has Flygon, which is really good. The other deck(Cutting Edge), is okay; one of the best cards in it is Leafeon, which is somewhat good for grass decks.
Supreme Victors:
These decks aren't that great.
Arceus decks:
I was not able to find any of these decks in any stores in Las Cruces. That being said, when I looked up the contents online, the Arceus decks don't look very worth buying, as Arceus-themed decks haven't been known to hold their own in battle...
HeartGold, SoulSilver decks:
I was not able to find any of these decks in any stores in Las Cruces. That being said, these decks are only mostly good for getting the basic and stage 1 pokemon for the pokemon prime starters for this set. Those same basic and stage 1 pokemon can also be found in Call of Legends.
Unleashed:
The decks from this set are "okay", and aren't all that worth buying.
Unduanted:
The Espeon(Daybreak) deck has Muk, which is good for beginning a psychic deck, and has Bellossom(grass) which is very good for healing all of your pokemon. I have not bought the other(Nightfall) deck yet, but from the look of it's contents, it doesn't look as good as the Espeon(DayBrak) deck, except for Burned Tower which comes with it.
Triumphant:
I haven't bought either of these decks yet. that being said, the Mamoswine (Verdant Frost) deck has some pokemon that are good for water decks and grass decks. The Nidoking(Royal Guard) doesn't look all that worth getting.
Call of Legends:
The tangrowth(Recon) deck has Ninetales, which is very good for building a fire deck, I have not yet bought the other deck though. From the looks of the contents of the other deck(Retort), it doesn't look very worth buying.
Also, decks are sometimes known to be bought just to get certain trainer, supporter, stadium, or energy cards, which can usually be bought for cheaper on ebay.
-What certain sets are known for:
The sets before the Arceus set are soon to be more of collectibles, once their rotated out, becuase the Pokemon Company makes a lot less packs of the cards from those sets.
The Arceus set is known as one of the worse sets to buy, other than Expert Belt and certain pokemon level X in the set, it is a rip-off.
Call of Legends will at some point become very collectible, becuase in that set are a lot of shiny Legendary pokemon.
Platinum and HeartGold Soulsiver have some of the best cards in this format, from my experience.
Most of the deck information is based on my experiences of buying them. I haven't much experience with electric decks or SP Pokemon, so if you're looking to make either of those kinds of decks, don't take my word for it, look it up on the internet.
For a more extensive guide, search the internet.
Also, if anyone is interested in improving their current deck(s), I would be willing to lend them a hand and buy them a deck, also the same goes for anyone who is interested in playing pokemon cards, but has not yet started.
I will also supply anyone with energies, if they need any and do not want to have to buy a deck. The only energies that I don't have enough to supply is Dark, Metal, and Electric.
If anyone thinks this is a waste of space in the forum, please let me know.
I'm posting this, becuase I'm trying to get more people to play pokemon cards, so I have more people to play against, and so we can start holding tournaments in Las Cruces. I really want people to play, so much that I'm willing to help beginners out by helping them improve their decks...
